Resilience in Action: James Stockdale and Epictetus
Otsuka Park Midori Library, 4 Chome-49-2 Otsuka, Bunkyo City, Tokyo 112-0012,, Tokyo, JPStoicism developed as a philosophy meant for use, not just theory, and few examples show this more vividly than James Stockdale, who lived its principles under extreme pressure.
When he was shot down over North Vietnam in 1965 and parachuting towards captivity, he told himself, “I am leaving that technological world and entering the world of Epictetus” a moment he described in his book Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot.
Having memorised key passages of Epictetus’ Enchiridion, Stockdale later said that it was these teachings that helped him survive the next seven and a half years as a prisoner of war.
We’ll look at how Epictetus’ ideas on resilience and courage supported Stockdale under extreme conditions, and how they can help us face the challenges and stresses of everyday life.
**Please note the time and venue.** It is a simple meeting room, but there are vending machines in the centre, so you may want to bring some change so that you can get a drink.
There is a waitlist, so if you need to change your reservation, please do so promptly to allow others enough notice to attend.
The group is non-religious and apolitical, focusing on practical philosophy.
No previous knowledge is needed. Newcomers welcome!24 人の参加者
