Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer decoration technique. Techiniques are involved drawing pictures, patterns, and letters on the surface of lacquerware using lacquer, and then sprinkling and fixing metal powder, such as gold or silver, onto the surface. In our workshop, you have the opportunity to create maki-e designs using traditional Japanese patterns (wagara) or your own original designs. Step into a quiet tatami space and experience a refined moment of Japanese culture. Calligraphy, tea, and seasonal sweets. A small and intimate workshop where you can experience three elements of Japanese culture in one setting. ⸻ Calligraphy Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) is a traditional art where creativity and mindfulness come together. Guided by calligraphy artist Ranka, you will explore the structure of strokes, the role of breath, and the balance between body and mind. We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event: FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces. PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
