Registration is now open for the “Shojin Cuisine Class 2025: Enrich Your Heart with Japanese Buddhist Vegetarian Cooking.”
The second of this fiscal year sessions will be held on February 21, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Our instructors will be Rev. Soshi Hata, who previously served as tenzo (head temple cook) at Manpuku-ji, the head temple of the Ōbaku Zen school, renowned for its fucha cuisine, and Mr. Minoru Sugiyama, Executive Chef of Western cuisine at Tokyo Grand Hotel.
Before the meal, participants will practice chair zazen meditation to calm and center the mind, followed by a creative Shojin cuisine course featuring innovative Western-style adaptations of traditional fucha recipes.
Program Overview
First Half:
After a brief introduction, a Buddhist priest will give a talk on “What is Shojin Cuisine?” You’ll then watch a live cooking demonstration by the chef and learn the recipes.
(No hands-on cooking is required, so no prior experience is needed!)
Second Half:
Enjoy beautifully arranged sweets and dishes inspired by the recipes you learned—prepared with professional skill and care.
All menu items are vegan-friendly. If you have allergies or dietary concerns, please contact us in advance at event@bdk.or.jp
