On June 15, 1904, more than a thousand people boarded a boat in lower Manhattan heading for a church picnic on Long Island — only 321 of them would return. How could a small fire onboard result in one of New York City's greatest losses of life? And why did it result in an exodus of residents from today's East Village? It's time to uncover a catastrophe largely forgotten by the general public, and the few landmarks that honor this terrible day.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the full story behind the 1904 sinking of the General Slocum, and its profound impact on New York Harbor, the ferry industry, and New York City for decades to come.
Led by licensed tour guide and General Slocum researcher Dave Gardner, our deep dive into this ill-fated voyage will include:- A brief overview of Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), a thriving German community that once resided in Manhattan's East Village
- A background of the General Slocum ferry, which was chartered that day to transport mostly women and children for their church's annual community outing
- A play-by-play of the doomed pleasure-cruising paddle-steamer, from the moment a small fire broke out to the fateful missteps made by the captain
- A discussion of the aftermath of the disaster, including the inquiry, Presidential report, and final recommendations
- The physical plaques, statues, and memorials dedicated to the lives lost on the General Slocum
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Dave — any and all questions about the General Slocum are welcomed and encouraged!

From tiny stone markers to full-scale sculptures, Washington is filled with historic memorials that often go unnoticed in the shadow of its most famous landmarks. What stories are hidden among these overlooked monuments scattered across our nation’s capital, and what do they reveal about the city’s past? It’s time to uncover Washington’s most unusual landmarks and the forgotten narratives behind them.
Join New York Adventure Club for a two-part series that explores Washington, DC’s most unusual — and often overlooked — monuments, memorials, and markers. In Part Two: Beyond the Mall, we’ll venture past the National Mall to uncover unexpected memorials tucked into parks, plazas, and neighborhoods across the city.
Led by Carolyn Muraskin, architectural historian and founder of DC Design Tours, this unique experience will include:
- Joan of Arc Statue — the only equestrian statue of a woman in Washington, celebrating a French heroine with transatlantic symbolism
- Sonny Bono Park — a tiny urban park honoring the entertainer-turned-congressman, and one of the city’s most unexpected memorials
- Inlet Bridge — a rarely noticed structure tied to ambitious—but ultimately unrealized—plans for Washington’s waterways
- Boy Scouts of America Memorial — a dramatic sculptural tribute reflecting early 20th-century ideals of citizenship and service
- Oscar Straus Memorial — honoring a diplomat and reformer whose legacy is often overlooked despite his national impact
- James Buchanan Memorial — a restrained monument to one of the nation’s most controversial presidents, quietly tucked away near Meridian Hill
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Carolyn — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

Few architectural movements captured the optimism and elegance of the postwar era quite like Mid-Century Modernism. But how did sleek glass towers and experimental suburban homes redefine the way people lived, worked, and imagined the future? From European design visionaries to iconic California residences, it’s time to explore the buildings and ideas that shaped one of the 20th century’s most influential design movements.
Join New York Adventure Club as we examine the evolution of Mid-Century Modern architecture from the postwar years through 1980, uncovering how architects, designers, and new industrial materials transformed the built environment during one of the most influential periods in modern design history.
Led by Michael Guido, architect and Professor of Architectural Design Technology at Humber Polytechnic, our virtual exploration of Mid-Century Modern architecture will include:
- A look at the European émigré architects who helped shape American Modernism, including Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Le Corbusier
- An overview of organic and craft-based architecture, featuring Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, and Carlo Scarpa’s materially expressive and site-responsive designs
- A discussion around postwar material innovations, including fiberglass, aluminum extrusions, rubber gaskets, and prefabricated construction systems
- An exploration of the Case Study House Program, and how architects like Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eero Saarinen redefined modern living on the West Coast
- A closer look at shifting architectural styles and meanings between 1960 and 1980, from corporate modernism and structuralism to regionalism and early postmodernism
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Michael — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
