🥾 Trip Description
The Isle of Wight is a true gem, compact yet full of variety, with 60 miles of coastline ranging from sheltered bays to dramatic chalk cliffs. It became an island around 7,000 years ago when rising seas cut it off from mainland Britain, leaving a place that feels close yet distinctly different. The adventure begins with a ferry crossing over the Solent, giving us wide sea views before we arrive on the island.
A defining feature is the chalk ridge that runs like a backbone from east to west. From its high points you can enjoy twin views: one side dropping to white cliffs and open sea, the other stretching across rolling downs. Beneath your boots, the geology shifts, chalk, greensand, clay, limestone, and sandstone supporting rich habitats. The Isle of Wight is one of the last British refuges of the red squirrel and home to 43 butterfly species.
We stay in an exclusively hired Edwardian hostel on the quieter western side, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hikes start right from the hostel, taking in flora-filled downs, secluded coves, and pretty villages. Nicknamed “Dinosaur Isle”, the island has yielded fossils from over 20 dinosaur species and more than 240 Bronze Age burial mounds.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert built Osborne House here, spending over 50 years enjoying its mild climate. The poet Lord Tennyson also lived here, inspired by the views that now bear his name. Across the weekend, we’ll walk peaceful coastal trails, enjoy sweeping cliff-top panoramas, explore quaint harbour towns, and discover the island’s unique blend of sea, scenery, and history.
📅 Itinerary
Friday – Arrival
Travel from London by train to Lymington, short ferry to Yarmouth, then a brief local bus to our exclusively hired Edwardian hostel at Totland Bay. Settle in, have a drink and get to know the group.
Driving? Several car-ferry routes serve the island, and the hostel has private off-road parking.
Saturday – Freshwater and Yarmouth coastal town
• Distance: 17km (11 miles)
• Grading: Beginner
• Ascent: 240m
• Hiking time: 4.5 – 5.5 hours
We begin hiking to Freshwater Bay, a beautiful curve of beach framed by white chalk cliffs, before following a gentle but rewarding loop. The trail takes us through leafy woodland and across a nature reserve alive with coastal birdlife. We’ll follow quiet paths to the harbour town of Yarmouth, with its cobbled streets, pretty waterfront, and historic pier for a short break to soak up the atmosphere. From here, we make our way back along scenic coastal stretches and open fields to the hostel, where freshly prepared cream teas and our delicious group dinner await.
Sunday – The Needles and Tennyson Down circular
• Distance: 10km (6 miles)
• Grading: Beginner/Intermediate - a few hills, but fairly short
• Ascent: 290m
• Hiking time: 4 – 5 hours
Sunday’s hike is the showpiece, arguably the finest walking route on the island. We climb gently onto the elevated chalk ridge of Tennyson Down, where panoramic sea views open up in both directions. As we follow the ridge, the landscape narrows towards the island’s most famous landmark: The Needles, a dramatic line of chalk stacks rising from the sea. Every turn reveals another postcard-perfect view. On the return, we keep high above the coast, passing windswept grasslands and open downs, before descending back to the hostel for our farewell.
Typical finish time at the hostel: 13:30–14:15. This marks the end of the organised trip.

• A great physical challenge with options to self shorten if needed (we pass 2 bus stops)
• Enjoy breathtaking cliff-top views for much of the hike
• Pass Birling Gap and the iconic Belle Tout Lighthouse
• Finish in Eastbourne — England’s sunniest town
• Explore the South Downs National Park — the newest in the UK🥾 Hike Description
This is Outdooraholics’ most popular hike, a dramatic and exhilarating journey across the chalk cliffs of Sussex that we have been leading for over 12 years. The Seven Sisters are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs shaped over thousands of years by natural erosion processes. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes. We begin in the coastal town of Seaford, home to a Napoleonic-era Martello Tower built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air.
Our route follows the South Downs Way, passing through Birling Gap and past the striking Belle Tout Lighthouse, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is Beachy Head, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below.
We finish in Eastbourne, statistically England’s sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with refreshments in a local pub.

• See Britain’s tiniest listed building — the famous Otford duck house
• Visit the remains of Otford Palace, once grander than Hampton Court
• Hike along the North Downs Way and the ancient Pilgrims Way
• Pause at Otford Mount, with views across the valley and a Bronze Age barrow
• Enjoy lunch at a 500-year-old traditional pub “time forgot”
• Conclude at a family-owned vineyard with optional wine flight & stone-baked pizza🥾 Hike Description
Our hike begins in the tranquil Darent Valley, following the Darent Valley Path into the historic village of Otford. Here we encounter remarkable landmarks including the quirky duck house — Britain’s smallest Grade II listed building — and the evocative ruins of Otford Palace, once a Tudor residence larger than Hampton Court and known as “the lost palace of Henry VIII.”From Otford we join the historic North Downs Way, tracing part of the medieval Pilgrims Way that itself followed an even older Stone Age track. The path leads to Otford Mount, where a Bronze Age barrow crowns the ridge and panoramic views stretch across the valley. Continuing onwards, we cross the nature-rich chalk grassland of Kemsing Down and pass by Otford Manor, high above the valley, before descending through woodland and fields.
Midway, we pause for lunch at a traditional 500-year-old pub, hidden away in the countryside. Inside, little has changed since the 1960s, giving it a nostalgic charm that feels like stepping back in time. With its rustic character, it makes for a unique and memorable break on our journey.
Our adventure ends at a family-owned vineyard, where you can sample local Kentish wines with an optional extra - tasting flight and stone-baked pizza. Surrounded by vines and rolling hills, this picturesque stop — complete with a boutique shop selling locally produced gifts — is the perfect finale to a day exploring Kent’s landscapes, history and hidden gems.

The harbour’s expansive tidal waters and saltmarshes are alive with birdlife, making it one of the UK’s richest coastal habitats. We follow a scenic trail past the Bosham Channel, a picturesque stretch of water that has inspired painters, poets, and writers for centuries. Soon we reach the Chichester Channel, once used as a wartime shipping passage and immortalised in a painting by J.M.W. Turner.
