On March 15, 1956, history was made when My Fair Lady , with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, opened on Broadway. It was instantly hailed as the one of the most perfect musicals of all time, setting a record as Broadway's most popular and longest-running show. But how is it that 65 years after the original production, My Fair Lady is still one of the most beloved works of American culture? This is the story of one of Broadway's most sensational works and its many adaptations in film, television, and music throughout the decades.
Join New York Adventure Club as we celebrate the theatrical and musical legacy of My Fair Lady , a Broadway masterpiece that didn't only reign supreme in New York, but also became a global cultural icon thanks to its London production, national touring company, and adaptations by major motion pictures and world-class musicians.
Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald, who is widely considered one of the nation's most prolific music writers, our musical analysis surrounding My Fair Lady will include:
-An overview of My Fair Lady with an analysis of its iconic characters, from the imperious elocution professor Henry Higgins, to the tough — but ultimately vulnerable — flower girl Liza Dolittle, to Liza's highly original moralist of a father, Alfred P. Dolittle
- How My Fair Lady went on to inspire the great jazz musicians like Quincy Jones, Billy Taylor, Oscar Peterson, Andre Previn, and Shelly Manne, who all went on to record so-called "cover" albums of the entire score, the first time that had been done
- A discussion of the original cast , including Julie Andrews as Liza Dolittle — numbers that were later sung by Audrey Hepburn in the movie version
- A study of the Jazz and pop interpretations of the great songs from the score , by Lena Horne, Jimmy Durante, Ethel Merman, Raquel Welch, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra among many others
- An analysis of the film and television adaptations along with the songs that took the world by storm, from "I Could Have Danced All Night," "Wouldn't it Be Loverly?," and "On the Street Where You Live"
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions about My Fair Lady are welcomed and encouraged!
