Take me out to the ball game at the Steel Yard to see the Gary Railcats defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes on rock n roll night, featuring post game fireworks! I spoke to the team rep and he said it should not be an issue to walk up and purchase tickets if we get there by 6pm. The games don't normally sell out. Grab your Elvis wig, bring your electric guitar, or wear your favorite rock n roll tee and join us for an evening of good old fashioned American fun at the ball park! *Disclaimer: kidding about the guitar 🤣

note: we are already beyond any possible parking limit at my house. i know not everyone will come, but if you get to my house, and there is no parking, you could try one of the National Park lots (don't forget to hang your permit on your mirror!), and you might get lucky, or otherwise, park at the Beverly Shores train station, walk down Broadway to Lake Front dr, turn left, and walk to the dip in the road till you see my golf cart parked, then come down to the beach on the trail at the west end of that mini-lot, and look for us on the shore. i will we wearing a faded blue hat that says "GREECE" on it.

there will be people at the house who are not going to the beach, so please get your water and use the washroom before coming to my house. there are also washrooms at the train station and the gas station on corner of US 12 and Broadway on the way in, and we will pass a washroom on the walk to the beach.

you will also pass some washrooms on your walk to the beach. make sure you know your way back to where you are parked, since we won't all be leaving at the same time.

our disappointingly cool April inspired me to think ahead, and dream of summer days at the beach.

by June 14 we should have a reasonable chance of a decent beach day, so i'm going to schedule an afternoon at Derby Creek Beach in Beverly Shores.

the Achilles Heel of National Park summer beach outings is parking, but we can park at my house and take a 15 minute walk to the shore, after a 3/4 mile walk through some pleasant streets and a short wooded trail.

... so looking forward to seeing you there for fun and sun together in the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer,

directions & parking instructions:

avoid the intersection of IN 49 & US 12 because of summer traffic jams; take IN 49 north to US 20; go east; turn left on CR 300 E (Kemil rd), then right on US 12, then left onto Broadway (traffic light opposite National Park campground); continue about 3/4 mile, and turn left at Marne, go to 11 w Marne--a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but you can park in the off-street spaces across the road from us, or in front of our neighbor to the east (towards Broadway); pull straight into the spaces and park as close together as you safely can; DO NOT block anyone in!

do not park in my driveway unless i tell you to. do not block the driveway of my neighbor across the street.

once you have parked, come to my front porch and take one of the parking permits there. put it in your car window facing the road.

we will wait till 11:30, then depart for the beach on foot.

Join us for a special evening as we honor Juneteenth, the newest national holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, and celebrate our dear friend Jenine’s birthday with a scenic hike at the State Park.

Meet at 6:00 PM at the Nature Center. We’ll hike Trail 7, one of the park’s most beautiful paths, leading us through the woods to the beach. From there, we’ll stroll to the Pavilion’s rooftop bar to enjoy refreshments and great company.

Jenine will bring her singing bowls, and you're welcome to carry light instruments if you’d like to contribute to the vibe. Along the way, we’ll take time to reflect on the meaning of Juneteeth, freedom, and community.

Afterward, we'll walk back to the Nature Center together. This promises to be a fun, thoughtful, and uplifting evening. Hope you can make it! -Eileen
