The philosophy of "Nausicaä" & Hayao Miyazaki /Seoul philosophy discussion group
상세정보
Greetings! In the spring of 2026, we are endeavoring to revive an in-person, English-language philosophy discussion group in Seoul. The name tentatively is "The Philosopher's Pebble."
All interested persons, who can discuss philosophical ideas in English, are welcome to join. No need to be any kind of expert. But doing some reading on the month's topic beforehand will help.
***
The first gathering is Sunday, February 22, 2026. It is intended to be introductory and exploratory. We envision it to be the first of regular in-person gatherings to come. Each gathering will be organized around a specific topic or two for discussion.
***
The topic for the Sunday, February 22nd gathering is:
THE PHILOSOPHY OF MIYAZAKI'S "NAUSICAA."
---> Attendees should be familiar with (have seen) at least the animated film "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (1h55m version, 2003 English dubbing),
AND
---> Attendees should ideally have read commentary on the philosophical ideas behind "Nausicaa."
Peter Paik's commentary on the philosophy of "Nausicaa" is recommended. It is Chapter 3 in his book "From Utopia to Apocalypse" (2010) (Chapter 3 is 13,000 words).
Here is the book (Find Chapter 3 at p.93-122 in the text; p.26-33 in the PDF):
