Why Do We Need Government? : the Self, the State of Nature, Social Contract

Greetings,

Have you ever wondered what the point of government is? When do the politicians grab each other's collars and shout imprecation at the National Assembly Hall? Or shamelessly ignore people's voices and the mandate by which the government was elected in the first place? Not to mention declaring Martial Law if it felt like it.

Since it is always susceptible to corruption and briberies, and often fall into the forms of oligarchy, demagogues by disinformation and misinformation, propaganda and deception, do we really need a government?

a) Is there such a thing as a Social Contract?

b) What would happen if there is no government due to perpetuating mistrust among factions and individuals against each other?

c) What is the concept of the state of nature? Is it too fictitious and implausible a concept?

Question 1 : In the Medieval period, most individuals were religious and saw themselves through the prism of religious doctrines and beliefs. How do we view the self in this day and age?
