This is wailist only event and defintely not a Beginner hike or pace.

Necessary gear: adequate foot traction, water, food, layers. Weather today is calling for light snow, mixed precipitation and rain. Based on conditions locally yesterday you will need to be prepared for slippery snow & ice.

If for whatever reason, you are not “feeling it”, please call it and know your bailouts or just turn around AFTER telling the group.

** We start hiking at 8am. Hike will be at a pretty steady, moderate 2.3 - 2.4mph average pace with several brief stops and lunch break. There's no sweep so know the route and possible bailout points.

The hike: This is a great hiking area with several nice viewpoints with views of the Hudson River, Breakneck, Schunnemunk, the Catskills, etc. There will be several long uphills and a couple short, steep rock scrambles.

The route:
- Enter the teal colored trail by the kiosk. Go 7/10th mile to yellow.
- Turn left onto yellow. Continue 2 miles over Storm King to blue trail.
- Turn left onto blue. Go down into valley 1.4 miles to white trail.
- Turn left onto white trail (old woods road). Continue to Rt. 218.
- Turn right at 218. Go 75 feet to blue trail.
- Take blue 3.4 miles going over North Point and to the white By-pass trail.
- Turn left onto white. Go to orange trail by Rt. 9W.
- Take orange trail for ~6/10th mile to yellow.
- Turn RIGHT onto yellow and cross over top of Butter Hill.
- After summit, go 2/10th mile to Blue/Red trail.
- Take Blue/Red about 7/10th mile to yellow.
- Turn left onto yellow and head downhill to teal trail.
- Turn right onto teal and head downhill to parking lot.

**Although we encourage members to stay together as a group, members who move at a more leisurely pace MUST be able to follow the trails if falling behind. There will be no sweep following the last hiker(s).

Pace: Moderate
Duration: Approx 5 - 5.5 hours
Elevation Gain: ~3,100 feet
Difficulty: - We will encounter several steep hills and rocky terrain. Not recommended for people doing their "first-ever" hike. You should have previously hiked similar distances and terrain.
Map: NY-NJ Trail Conference Map #113; Avenza mapping app; or similar maps/apps
Gear: microspikes or similar pointed traction; water, lunch/snacks, etc. Appropriate footwear. Clothing for changing temps.
