๐ Seodaemun Prison History Hall
์์ธ์ ๋ณด
Seodaemun Prison, a modern-style prison built by the Japanese Empire, opened its doors in October 1908 and was used as a prison for 80 years until its closure in November 1987. The prison was constructed with red bricks and had a circular layout, which allowed for effective surveillance of the inmates.
During the Japanese colonial era, many anti-Japanese independence activists were imprisoned there. After Korea's liberation, it became a site where pro-democracy activists resisting authoritarian and military regimes were incarcerated.
The prison underwent several name changes over the years. Subsequently, the Seodaemun-gu district preserved the site and, with the aim of learning from history, opened the Seodaemun Prison History Hall on November 5, 1998. It operates as a museum to commemorate and honor the freedom and peace aspirations of independence activists and pro-democracy movement leaders, emphasizing the lessons learned from the past.
