..and I agree with Zahir :-)
When most tech startups say they need an equity-based CTO, they're basically just looking for a free developer. And usually, they'll want someone who they can offload the responsibility for the technology to. Not saying this is you, but it's very common.
If however you have a enough budget to outsource/offshore your development, then you may just need some high-level strategic advice and product management on a part-time basis in order to properly manage that process and make sure you don't lose your shorts :-P

Agree with Gurj. CTO is a fairly loaded term because the actual tasks carried out by a CTO depends heavily on the type of company and the company size.
I am tempted to say based on my experience that when starting out, one needs strategic tech advice may be once a week or two weeks and some hands on the ground which many people get hold off through outsourcing. It is tempting to look for a person that can do both but one needs to be incredibly lucky for that to happen. More importantly one may end up spending precious time looking for a person like that when it is usually not necessary.

Hi all ,
My view is this if your strapped for cash then you need to think to yourself what do you really need a CTO for question is do you need Techincal expertise or do you need a strategic decision making . If it is the later then those that are passionate enough can spare time . I have helped out a couple of business in my time just by giving simple directions . If it's hands to the ground and actual work you need to get done more from engineering perspective then you need to ask for that . As a start up forget the titles and concentrate on the task and get it done

I know that it's random to start a new topic but figured if I'm apart of the group I should speak up and get involved!
So I'm in partnership with some serious investors who love to fund business owners and small tech start ups! They've done some amazing work and I'd love to have others be apart of, and benefit, from these professionals.
Additionally, im running my own business witch is a platform for average people, to build a life they don't need a vacation from. It works really well for business minded people who want to launch in the direction of their success!
I think we can work together. Do you guys think we could?

Dear group members,
Does anybody have experience/knowledge about how much equity to give to a CTO in a tech startup?
Startup can take some time before it takes off, how to keep a CTO motivated during starting up? They can deliver the work on time?
Many thanks
