In recent years, there has been a noticeable demographic change in the Asian community in the West, with new generations coming in from Asia especially from mainland China. Different from the earlier generations that have settled in for decades, they are much more high-profile regarding their life styles, well tuned to their own cultural trends back home and yet with a big appetite for the international aspirations among all areas (housing, education, fashion, etc.). This has aroused a lot curiosity around about who they are, what they are doing, and why they are just different? And sometimes not all without criticism when things become "over the top".
"In 2013, Doubleday published Kevin’s first novel, 'Crazy Rich Asians', which became an international bestseller and has been translated into 13 languages. Its sequel, "China Rich Girlfriend", also rose to the top of the bestseller lists around the world in 2015, and in May 2017, the final book in the trilogy, "Rich People Problems", debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List at No. 12. Earlier in 2017, Warner Brothers announced they had greenlit "Crazy Rich Asians" and the movie is currently in production, possibly starring Constance Wu, the main actress from "Fresh Off the Boat", a game-changer in its own right as the first Hollywood romantic comedy to feature an all-Asian cast."
Although Kwan said "Crazy Rich Asians" was loosely based on his childhood in Singapore, he intended the novel to "introduce a contemporary Asia to a North American audience."
