Carl Sagan once said “we live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology”. In agriculture, the effects of this ignorance are clearly showing. Activist groups and food gurus have successfully scared and confused consumers and policy makers about genetically modified food. Sadly, their myths have spread far and wide, stalling the innovation in agriculture for developing countries that desperately need it. I want to tackle the most pervasive of these myths and show GMOs are nothing to be feared, but just another tool to help feed the world.

Tom van den Hove is active in the group 'Marching against Myths about Modification' and demonstrated at the same time as the 'March against Monsanto' protests. More info can be found on the dutch Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mamythsnl) or the international site (http://www.mamyths.org).
