Kotlin in Action
In a short presentation followed by a live coding session, Jarno Walgemoed and Stephan Oudmaijer, founders of Sourcelabs B.V., will highlight some of the functionality that the Kotlin programming language brings to JVM. They will share their experience implementing microservices using Kotlin for the biggest e-commerce company in the Netherlands. The theoretical part is followed by a workshop to get a feeling what Kotlin can do for you and your projects.
GraphQL: REST in peace
Developing RESTful APIs can be a real pain, especially when aggregating data from multiple (micro)services into a single response. What would Facebook do in such a situation? In this presentation, we will have look at GraphQL Java, which is the Java implementation of Facebook`s GraphQL specification. We will uncover how it is different from RESTful APIs and how GraphQL provides a developer/user friendly alternative for developing APIs. We will demonstrate how to build a GraphQL application in Kotlin and discuss a few of the possible downsides of using GraphQL.
About the speakersJarno Walgemoed has been writing software in several languages for over 15 years. He started out using Visual Basic, J++ and C++ but finally settled on Java as his main programming language. While working on complex projects in all sizes and shapes he came across several JVM languages, such as Groovy, Scala, Ceylon and now Kotlin. Out of all of these languages, Kotlin is by far his (current) favorite. Recently he (co-)founded a company called Sourcelabs that specializes in Agile software development using Java and Kotlin.
Stephan Oudmaijer has over 15 years of experience developing software in Java. During his career, he has tried and worked with several different programming languages like JavaScript, Ruby, PHP, VB, C++, Groovy, Scala and Go. Although he still likes writing software in Java, his current language of choice would most definitely be Kotlin. Stephan worked on many different complex and large-scale applications and is a firm believer of Agile software development. Recently he (co-)founded a company called Sourcelabs that specializes in Agile software development using Java and Kotlin.
IT Dev Café | Share your passion!
Once a month Spilberg opens the IT Dev Café for everyone that is willing to listen and discuss different IT development topics. As always, we take care of the location, speakers, burgers and beer (of course we also have soda). The only thing you have to bring is a good question to feed the debate. Do you have a question about this meetup, or do you have a great idea for a future meetup? Send us an e-mail at marketing@spilberg.nl. We would love to hear from you.
Parking
There are cheap parking options close to the meetup location. In the streets after “De Boelenlaan” (5/10 minute walk) you can park for €1,40 per hour between 08:00 – 19:00. After 19:00 it’s for free.
