The holidays are over and it’s time to get the Meetup running again for another fun year. Let’s start off with a Downtown Manhattan city walk practicing street photography along the Bowery.
We will meet at the “Alamo”, also known as the Astor Place Cube or simply The Cube in Astor Place at 8th Street (near the 4 & 6 trains) and wander down the Bowery, looking for interesting photo ops.
On the way we will take a brief detour on Rivington Street and explore the small but heavily graffitied Freeman Alley. At the end of the walk, reaching Chinatown we might find refreshment and a bite to eat.
“The Bowery is a historic street and neighborhood located in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It runs approximately 1.6 kilometers (0.99 miles) from Chatham Square in the south to Cooper Square at East 4th Street in the north. The area is known for its rich history and cultural significance.
Origins*: The Bowery was originally known as Bowery Lane before 1807. The name "Bowery" comes from the Dutch word "bouwerie," meaning "farm," reflecting the area's agricultural roots in the 17th century.*
Colonial Era*: The street was established as a thoroughfare connecting farmlands to the city center. It was home to early settlers, including Petrus Stuyvesant, the last Dutch governor of New Amsterdam.*
Don't forget your charged batteries and empty memory cards.
Tripods are not needed on this photo walk. All-purpose lenses especially of the wider variety are suggested but any and all cameras (including cellphone cameras) are welcome as are all users from novice to expert.
Please be on time! The NYC Subway System is a hellscape of unimaginable delays that will wreak havoc on your mind, body, schedule, and soul. Plan your trip with some extra time!
Details of this event may be added or changed at any time, so please check in periodically on this page. Cellular phone numbers are private and will not be provided. If you have questions, please leave them in the comments below before the event begins.
