ADS Webinar | Making AI Fair in Practice: A Practitioner's Perspective

𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗔 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲

In this ADS Webinar we aim to explore how modern AI systems can be made safe and responsible in practice, i.e., how can AI-driven systems that utilize for example facial recognition or personalized recommendations be responsibly deployed in everyday applications that impact millions of customers and citizens?

In particular, we focus on fairness: what kind of potentially harmful outcomes are we facing when using AI-driven applications for high-stakes decision making? How can we ensure that these applications are not harmful to citizens? Which safeguards can be put in place to ensure fair outcomes?

We will hear from Jeroen Silvis, lead data scientist at the City of Amsterdam, who is at the forefront of these difficult challenges.

Abstract: These are interesting times as the city of Amsterdam is gathering, making accessible, and bringing together more data than ever. At the moment there is huge potential to build data science solutions with a major impact to the city. However, what does it mean when it comes to social issues, such as healthcare or living-standards? Is it simply a matter of trying to optimize the social services that the municipality provides, or should we be cautious and consider concepts like privacy, fairness, and explainable AI above anything else? This talk will be an attempt to explain the context and challenges for data scientists working in government, by sharing real experiences of attempts, struggles, and lessons learned while trying to make the city a better place.

After Jeroen’s talk, we will take questions via sli.do (the participation code will be made available online 1 week before the webinar) so that the public can post their questions to be addressed by the speaker and moderators before and during the webinar.
