Amsterdam has always been a city of architecture, but during the 1980s, the city’s architectural scene got a major boost thanks to the redevelopment of the IJ riverbanks. The most striking transformation took place in Oostelijk Havengebied (Eastern Docklands) – an area built almost from scratch on a series of artificial islands that were once part of Amsterdam’s port.

Today, the Eastern Docklands are one of the most fascinating examples of modern Dutch urban design, with water making up two-thirds of the area and cutting-edge architecture occupying the remaining land. This unique landscape attracts architecture lovers from all over the world.

During this 7 km guided walk, we’ll explore:

  • Large residential blocks in De Rietlanden, Borneo, and Sporenburg
  • Iconic modernist buildings on KNSM Island
  • Smaller-scale designs on Java Island, where bridges and narrow canals create a unique atmosphere
  • Striking buildings along the Oostelijke Handelskade
  • A final view of the IJ waterfront and the Muziekgebouw, one of Amsterdam’s most modern landmarks

This walk is a journey through one of Amsterdam’s lesser-known neighborhoods, a place where modern design meets water and history, creating a striking contrast with the city’s traditional canal houses.

### 🍻 After the Walk: Beer Temple

After the tour, we’ll head to Beer Temple, a true institution in Amsterdam’s beer scene and one of the top craft beer bars in Europe. With 50 taps and a strong focus on American craft breweries, Beer Temple has been, for years, the only place in Europe to find legendary US names like Cascade, The Bruery, and Schramm's, alongside some of the best Dutch brews.
American craft beer has shaped much of today’s global beer revolution, inspiring new trends and bold flavors – and this is the perfect place to taste what made it all possible.
