This month’s Tell Me Wine takes us high into the mountains — where the air gets thinner, the landscapes become dramatic, and vines grow in places where you wouldn’t expect them to survive.

With the Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina as inspiration, we’ll explore what happens to wine when viticulture climbs into alpine territory. Think of it as a tasting “ascent”: wines made where slopes are steep, climates are extreme, and terroir becomes truly heroic.

Instead of focusing on the host cities themselves, we’ll dive into two iconic mountain wine regions closely linked to the Olympic areas:

🏔️ Valtellina (Lombardy) – the realm of high-altitude, terraced vineyards and alpine Nebbiolo. A dramatic landscape shaped by centuries of mountain viticulture, where red wines show elegance, tension, and a very distinctive character. This is Nebbiolo at altitude: different from Barolo, but just as fascinating.

🏔️ Alto Adige (South Tyrol) – one of Italy’s greatest white wine regions, and a key player in the Alpine wine world. Here we’ll focus mainly on whites: from aromatic varieties like Gewürztraminer (which actually takes its name from Tramin/Termeno in this region) to Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot varieties, Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Fresh, precise, mineral wines shaped by mountain climates and strong diurnal temperature shifts.

In total, we’ll taste at least 12 wines, comparing reds from Valtellina and whites from Alto Adige, and discovering how altitude, light, slopes, and climate shape completely different expressions of wine.

As always, the tasting is thematic and guided: not just drinking, but understanding territories, history, grape varieties, and why these mountain regions are so special. And of course, we’ll pair everything with carefully selected snacks inspired by the same regions.
