🍷 Tell Me Wine #15 — Styria 🇦🇹
Details
For the fifteenth chapter of Tell Me Wine, we’ll travel to one of Europe’s most exciting — and still surprisingly under-the-radar — wine regions: Styria, in southern Austria.
📍 Friday 26 June — 19:00
📍 Leiden
This time, we’ll explore the wines of Wachstum König, one of the absolute benchmark producers of the region and, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating wineries in Austria today.
Working on just three hectares of vineyards, Wachstum König combines razor-sharp precision with a deeply experimental spirit. Yes, there is the classic Styrian Sauvignon Blanc — tense, vibrant and mineral — but then things become much wilder, stranger and far more interesting.
We’ll taste wines that move between tradition and pure controlled madness:
✨ a Morillon (the local name for Chardonnay) aged Jura-style under flor for 18 months
✨ beautifully calibrated skin-contact wines
✨ a Riesling with explosive personality
✨ a Yellow Muscat aged in amphora
✨ and one of the most unusual reds you’ll probably taste this year — somewhere between Jura and Nebbiolo in spirit.
All of this produced with no added sulphites.
This is exactly the kind of producer I love bringing to Tell Me Wine: wines with identity, tension, personality and a very strong sense of place — wines that don’t simply try to “taste good”, but that actually have something to say.
As always:
