Talk 1 : Learning and teaching in the age of AI: How to avoid raising (or becoming) a generation of idiots
Speaker : Louis‑Philippe Kerkhove | Founder & CTO, Crunch Analytics; Professor, Ghent University
Louis‑Philippe Kerkhove is the founder and CTO of Crunch Analytics (°2016), a Ghent & Rotterdam-based data & AI agency helping companies build smart forecasting and optimization solutions. He also teaches supply chain and operations at Ghent University.
Abstract : Traditional methods of acquiring skills, such as writing essays or completing research assignments, are easily automated using genAI. While convenient, this poses a problem for both teaching and learning. Now more than ever, it's important to develop marketable skills that go beyond the basic skill set required for (fast-disappearing) entry-level jobs.
This is especially relevant in the field of data science, where technical proficiency alone is no longer enough. The ability to think critically, learn independently, and adapt quickly to new tools and technologies is essential for staying relevant in a landscape shaped by automation and AI.
What are the most effective ways to learn new skills today? This question is relevant from both the perspective of a teacher and that of an individual seeking to acquire useful, marketable skills.
