Wat we doen
Meet other developers and users of Kubernetes. Kubernetes is Cloud Native Computing Foundation's orchestrator for containers at scale. It handles scheduling onto nodes in a compute cluster and actively manages workloads to ensure that their state matches the users declared intentions; runs on any cloud and any hardware. Any skill level is welcome; we’re all new to Kubernetes and we want to create an open, welcoming environment for other Cloud Natives.
We use the #nl-users channel on the Kubernetes Slack (join here: http://slack.k8s.io/) to coordinate.
Please submit your talk via https://www.papercall.io/ams-k8s-meetup

We will be hosting a Cloud Native Day on the 14th of June in Amsterdam and we have news: Kubecon is coming to Amsterdam in 2020!

---The CNCF Sustainability Week is an annual event organised by the CNCF Technical Advisory Group for Environmental Sustainability (TAG ENV) in collaboration with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). The event's main goal is to promote environmental sustainability in the cloud native industry and open source space.
Our amazing venue this time will be SustainaLab in the Matrix ONE building, located on Amsterdam Science Park (University of Amsterdam) gracefully hosting us.
We even secured a professor and a researcher as speakers, they'll unveil the secrets of sustainable AI to the audience!
We'll have a half-day full of workshops, talks and plenty of time and (open) space to connect and brainstorm on how to get better sustainability out of cloud native software.
Agenda
These are the talks in our green agenda 💚- Reducing the energy consumption of Large Language Models - Pepijn de Reus (UvA)
The rapid development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the past decade comes at a cost: energy consumption of digital infrastructure is soaring. With the strict targets to limit carbon emissions such that we remain underneath 1.5 degrees of global warming, this energy demand is becoming a societal issue. One prompt to ChatGPT equals one lightbulb being switched on for an hour, with millions of daily users the narrative becomes clear. So, what can we do to reduce the energy consumption of these large language models? Pepijn de Reus (UvA) will present the latest insights based on current research and his master thesis. - Reducing the Environmental Impact of Software: A Holistic Definition beyond Just Carbon Emissions? - Alessandro (CNCF Ambassador), Flavia (Aknostic), Leonieke (Gemeente Amsterdam - City Hall), Pepijn (UvA)
The panel will dive into the various dimensions of software's environmental impact, including energy consumption, electronic waste, resource use, and the lifecycle of software products. We will also explore how software architecture, coding practices, and user behavior contribute to environmental degradation, and discuss innovative strategies for mitigating these effects. - Hidden secrets of Datacenters - Mark Sibering (Devoteam)
Datacenters are energy-hungry, complex beasts and due to the rapid development in technology that is ever increasing. In this talk I give a brief glimpse behind the scenes. - Get insights into your software and cloud emissions with the Kubernetes Emissions Insights Tool - Flavia Paganelli (Aknostic)
You can’t improve what you can't measure. That's why we are working on this tool to empower developers and businesses by understanding and estimating the environmental impact of their cloud usage, from energy consumption to carbon emissions and the impact of hardware manufacturing. By providing insights into these metrics, Kubernetes Emissions Insights Tool enables users to make informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint and improve sustainability in their cloud operations. By answering the boiling question, “What are the consequences of my software running?” we aim to help developers and businesses with reducing their environmental impact. - Frugal Software Architects Drive Sustainability - Bas Anneveld (TechNative B.V.)
In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, software architects have a crucial role in driving this change within the cloud-native industry. This presentation will explore how adopting frugal software architecture principles, guided by best practices from the FinOps Foundation, can lead to both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable application development.

Here we go again! We hope everyone had a great summer break; this time, we found a great new venue and partner for the Dutch Kubernetes/Cloud Native Community Group in Amersfoort, a more central city to allow more folks to join.Agenda:
18.00 – Walk-in/Doors open 🚪
18.45 – Food & Drinks 🍕🥤☕️
19.15 – Welcome by CNCF ambassadors and EDSN
19.20 – Scaling Energy Data with Kubernetes at EDSN - Aris van Ommeren 🎤
19.40 – Break 🥤🚽
20:00 – Managing traffic when you realise you need to go multicluster - John Keates🎤
20.35 – Talk to other people 🙋🗣+ Lighting talks 💡🌩️
21:30 – Time is up! See you next time. 👋Abstracts:
**First talk: "**Scaling Energy Data with Kubernetes at EDSN" - Aris van Ommeren
Every company starts somewhere on their platform journey, but initial choices can eventually limit growth. This talk shares the story of how we transformed a platform bogged down by manual processes, excessive customisation, and slow change management. We’ll cover the steps we took to overcome these challenges, the actions we're taking now, and the plans for future improvements. You'll learn about the technical hurdles we faced, including AWS management, networking, security, and IAM, as well as the organisational shifts in team enablement, business solutions, and fostering an engineering community of practice."
Second talk: Managing traffic when you realise you need to go multicluster - John Keates
As clusters grow in size and quantity and your traffic management gets more involved in the day-to-day operations of your workloads, you will likely run into a multi-cluster traffic management problem: shared external resources. A service mesh helps a lot and brings you additional controls and ecosystems to build with and for east-west traffic some well established patterns exist. But it doesn’t solve cross-cluster ingress cases, cluster failover or clusters-as-cattle. To alleviate these issues, we’re working on a design that leverages dedicated ingress clusters to allow the outside world in, while leaving issues like multi-owner external DNS or shared load balancers at the door.
Transportation:
There's a car park (Parkeergarage Asch van Wijck) right next door, and it's very inexpensive; let us know if you need the parking expenses covered. Otherwise (greener choice, and we love greener choices! Did you know we're hosting the TAG Environmental Sustainability Week in Amsterdam?), Amersfoort Central station is 8 minutes' walk!Photography/Video consent:
We will be taking photos and videos during the event and will use these photos and videos for social media and promotional materials. By coming to the meet-up, you give us your consent to take photos and videos of you.Code of Conduct:
