Reading and discussion group Effective Altruism

In addition to our informal monthly Effective Altruism meetups we will hold reading and discussion meetings every two months. During these meetings we will read and discuss articles or books that are about Effective Altruism or topics that are related to it. Effective Altruism consists in the honest and impartial attempt to find out how to do the most amount of good with our available time and resources by applying rational reasoning, data and scientific evidence. Effective Altruism covers alot of different themes and domains that concern effectively helping others, be it in the short-term or the longer run. If you want to delph deeper into the question on doing good better, you're more than welcome to join these twomonthly meetings.

For the first meetings we will look into cause prioritization and careerchoice. What causes in the world are most pressing? Which are most dire? And how can you use your career to do the most good as possible? In an attempt to adress these questions, the organization 80.000 hours does research and advices on with what careers you can do the most good. During the first meeting we will discuss a part of their careeradvice, namely the one on world's most pressing problems and how to use your career in order to work on them. Parallel aan de informele maandelijkse Effectief Altruïsme bijeenkomsten zullen we tweemaandelijks lees- en discussiebijeenkomsten houden. Gedurende deze bijeenkomsten zullen we artikelen of boeken lezen die betrekking hebben op Effectief Altruïsme, of daaraan gerelateerde thema's. Effectief Altruïsme draait om de vraag hoe we beter goed kunnen doen. In de poging daar een antwoord op te geven maken Effectief Altruïsten gebruik van rationaliteit en wetenschappelijk bewijs om te achterhalen hoe we een zo groot mogelijke, positieve sociale impact kunnen hebben met de ons beschikbare tijd en middelen. Effectief Altruïsme is inmiddels een overkoepelend woordenpaar geworden voor veel verschillende thema's en domeinen die draaien om het effectief helpen van anderen, zowel op de korte, middellange, als lange termijn. Als je wat meer de diepte in wil met betrekking tot het thema Effectief Altruïsme, sluit je dan bij deze tweemaandelijkse bijeenkomsten aan.

Binnen Effectief Altruïsme probeert men ook te bepalen hoe je met je carrière het grootste verschil kunt maken. De vraag is dan op welke doelen je je met je carrière het beste kunt richten. Welke problemen in de wereld verdienen de meeste aandacht? Welke zijn het meest urgent? Deze vragen houdt 80.000 hours zich mee bezig: zij proberen carrièreadvies te geven om mensen te stimuleren zoveel mogelijk goeds te doen met hun carrière. We zullen daarom voor de eerste keer een deel van hun carrièreadvies lezen: wat zijn werelds grootste problemen? En wat kun je daaraan doen met je carrière?
