About this meetup's topic
Etherisc pioneered the concept of smart contract-based insurances with a Flight Delay Insurance: https://fdd.etherisc.com/ . A smart contract holds the premium paid and automatically assigns the claim when an event happens. This reduces the overhead of traditional insurances, and makes a lot of new business models possible. Stephan Karpischek will tell more about the current state of Etherisc and the roadmap towards an open protocol for decentralized insurance.
A consumer-facing application for FlightDelay (a chatbot!) was developed by Joris Bontje and his team, and won prizes at two recent hackathons (Token (https://blog.tokenbrowser.com/announcing-the-token-hackathon-winners-93223a062113) and Status (https://blog.status.im/announcing-winners-of-the-status-global-hackathon-a44fb54e98f7)).
In insurance (as in many other types of smart contracts!), information on real-world events needs to be fed into the blockchain so the smart contract can process it. An "oracle" is the generic name for a party that brings in external information. Thomas Bertani will present Oraclize.it, a service that makes it easy for developers to build smart contracts that depend on real-world data feeds, in a verifiable and auditable way.
Show and tell
Like every time, we'll also have a number of mini-talks: 5-minute demos, or even just pitches for a project you’re working on, or planning to work on. No slides required.
Preferably let us know in advance, so we can make sure you have your time slot reserved (use the organizer contact button).

New to development on Ethereum?
We welcome new people to the meetup, we do ask however that you do some effort beforehand to familiarise yourself with (development on) Ethereum.
