New Year Walk: Groesbeeksebos, Mookerheide and Sint Jansberg (14km)
Details
On this circular walk we will wander through the forest of Groesbeek into the Mookerheide where we can get lovely views of the surrounding countryside. We can stop halfway at the Boscafe Merlijn which is on the border with Germany. Then we walk back via the forest of Sint Jansberg.
In the final stretch of the walk, we go back towards Groesbeek village through an area of historical significance, known as Klein America (“Little America”) which was one of the landing zones for the Allied forces during Operation Market Garden in WWII. We even go past the landing site of one of the gliders (there is now a wire frame replica of the glider – see photo above).
The route is mainly rough, uneven paths so sturdy walking shoes are essential. We stop at the halfway point for refreshments but bring water and maybe some snacks. As it is getting dark early at this time of year I am starting the walk a bit earlier to make sure we finish whilst it’s still light.
