Constellations Documentary Premiere: The third half

Details

“Getting older comes naturally. Growing up does not.”

In this intimate, candid documentary we witness the personal stories of three strong women at the start of the third half of their lives. We watch them relive the deepest depths of their youth and their place in their family history. Through alternative psychotherapies, including family constellations, they try to free themselves from their excess baggage. How do you move past history that has become part of your identity?

Louise is a mother and her husband recently walked away. During the covid pandemic, she hit a bad patch that led to a suicide attempt. She discovers that the death of her parents played a major role in this downfall and reconnects with the loneliness she experienced as a child during a long period of sickness.

Marloes is a mother as well and also recently divorced, but in this case it was she who left her family. Gradually, Marloes discovers that her lack of trust in men has its roots in her youth, in which aggression and violence played a major role.

Ninetta acts as caregiver for both her parents. In the search for herself she encounters an old family trauma that has never really been talked about. She wants to face the origins of her judgments and discover where her rebellion and fear of living comes from. And how much this fear hinders her from living life to the fullest.

The systemic coach who guides them through all this is Oscar Westra van Holthe. Oscar: “At a certain point we have to make a reassessment of our lives. You could rationalize that, but you’ve also got to feel it. So that you can let go of those burdens and enjoy the last period of your life. So that you can look both back and forward with pride and dignity.” Oscar is best known for the Dutch VPRO program 'Sander en de kloof', in which in the first episode he hosts a session with writer and presenter Sander Schimmelpenninck. This coaching session sets the framework for the series.

The three stories in this documentary are extremely personal and have been filmed incredibly intimately. The themes that come up, including the death of loved ones, thoughts of death, aggression and violence, make these stories universal. We also see the power and love that are hidden underneath these heavy themes. The documentary wants to contribute to the normalization of the conversation and openness about those both sides of life. In an approachable, sometimes humorous manner, the poignant stories deliver a lovingly yet confronting mirror to everyone's own life.

Note that the speaking language in the documentary is Dutch, but that translation in English will be provided within the subtitles.
