For this meetup, we're excited to welcome Mohamed El Siouffy, who will be giving two talks covering database optimization and centralized error reporting.

About Mohamed
Mo is a computer scientist with a Master's degree from the University of Groningen, specializing in Cloud Computing, Big Data, and AI.
He is currently Technical Director at Stars and Stories. Before that, Mo spent several years in Big Data and AI consultancy, working with major organizations across the Netherlands.

Beyond his industry work, Mo has taught at three universities, advised more than 40 startups on their data strategies, and published two Udemy courses, with ratings of 5.0 and 4.95 and more than 500 learners. His work sits at the intersection of scalable cloud infrastructure, data, and AI, with a focus on turning complex technology and raw data into practical solutions that teams can actually use and act on.

Talk 1: Ghost Indexes: Hunting Down What Your Database Forgot
As applications evolve, databases tend to accumulate indexes that are no longer needed. In Firestore, this can lead to unnecessary storage costs, slower writes, and eventually hitting the limit on the number of composite indexes.
Firestore doesn't provide a built-in way to identify and remove obsolete indexes. In this talk, Mo will show how his team built a data-driven solution to identify and safely remove these "ghost indexes".
While the examples focus on Firestore, the underlying challenge is familiar to anyone working with databases: how do you know which indexes are still being used, and when is it safe to remove them?

Talk 2: From Silence to Signal: Centralizing Error Reporting Across Our Stack
Production errors often remain unnoticed until a user reports a problem. Meanwhile, errors are scattered across browser consoles, service logs, and different applications, making it difficult to spot patterns and catch issues early.
Mo will show how his team built a centralized error reporting pipeline using a number of simple cloud components. Applications across their stack send errors and useful context to a central collector, which then turns the data into a live dashboard.
The talk will cover how errors travel from different applications into one central place, and how the same approach can be applied across different applications and technology stacks.

Additional info:
Both talks use Firestore and cloud-based applications as their practical examples, but the concepts and challenges discussed are not limited to a specific technology. The ideas can be applied to other databases, cloud platforms, and technology stacks as well.
