It is time for another edition of the PyData Eindhoven meetup. Join us on the 2nd of March at Pipple for an evening of technical talks for technical people. Please note that this event will take place at Pipple which is located in the city centre of Eindhoven.

We were humbled by the large interest at the PyData Conference in December 2022. To keep the momentum going we are organising this event around the theme: Python with Purpose.

Agenda:
17:30 - Doors open
18:00 - Welcome and Introduction by Gareth Thomas
18:05 - Short introduction by Jeroen de Haas why "Python with Purpose"
18:15 - Talk #1 - Probabilistic time series forecasting for balancing the electrical grid by Tom Lemmens from Dexter
18:45 - Dinner/Drinks
19:30 - Talk #2 - How data is being used in the world of soccer by Jerom van der Zande from Pipple & Folkert Boer from RKC Waalwijk
20:00 - Talk #3 - Numbers behind the music by Ralf van Meer from Pipple
20:30 - Closing words
20:35 - Drinks & networking at The Bar Fifth (next door)

Title: Probabilistic time series forecasting for balancing the electrical grid
Description:
How can probabilistic forecasting accelerate the energy transition? The rapid growth of non-steerable and intermittent wind and solar power requires accurate forecasts and the capacity to plan under uncertainty. This talk will show why to consider probabilistic instead of deterministic forecasts for scheduling problems. We will consider methods for creating and evaluating probabilistic forecasts. Finally we will discuss how probabilistic price and wind power forecasts can be combined in optimal short-term power trading strategies.

Title:How data is being used in the world of soccer
Description:
Data science in the world of sports has started to advance after the story of the Oakland Athletics in 2002. Through the power of data science, the baseball team managed to set an American League record by putting together a 20-game winning streak and became one of the most cost-efficient baseball teams of that time. Since then, more and more sports have embraced the potential of advanced data analytics, up and until the point where the most popular sport in the world, (association) football, also went overboard.

Around 5 years ago, a collective deal has been struck with all clubs in the Eredivisie (the Dutch Premier League) and multiple data parties to make data more accessible to all clubs. Clubs will receive, among other things, live (data) insights during matches and detailed post-match information such as tracking and event data.

Among other clubs, RKC Waalwijk has done its best to adapt to the possibilities this data brings. Data-driven scouting, physical data monitoring players’ performance and analyzing tracking and event data to assess the upcoming opponents have become mainstream at RKC Waalwijk.

In this talk, we will discuss the research conducted by one of Pipple’s data scientists Jerom van der Zande about using tracking data to analyze the opponent’s scoring opportunities against RKC. Furthermore, RKC Waalwijk’s data analyst Folkert Boer will elaborate on how this research is being used in practice as well as demonstrate the other ways RKC Waalwijk has been leveraging data to improve its game.

Title: Numbers behind the music
Description:
Music is a creative artform. As almost everybody is affected by some style of music but it’s not always known how much mathematics is behind music.

Johann Sebastian Bach, who lived 300 years ago, created the foundation for the western music we all know today. Did you realize that the pop songs you hear on the radio are all based on the things that were invented back then?

In this inspirational talk I’m going to explain a little bit about this mathematics, and I give some examples using a Python notebook and a live piano.
