Python Rotterdam meetup #4 (Delft)

Details

It's time for the fourth Rotterdam Python meetup!
This edition will be held by VIKTOR (www.viktor.ai) in Delft, food and drinks are taken care of.

The preliminary list of talks:

  • Coert Metz (Quantib BV): Microservices with Python for AI in radiology
  • Bas Nijholt: Home Automation and python
  • Sander van de Graaf (Downdetector): Detecting outages at scale
  • Ambar: personal Github projects

Coert Metz (Quantib BV) - Microservices with Python for AI in radiology
At Quantib BV we are building a platform for AI in radiology. I will show you how
we use Django and the Django REST framework to create the microservices
that constitute the platform. I will also touch upon the considerations made
in the context of medical software development.

Bas Nijholt - Home Automation and python
My house runs on Python from a Raspberry Pi.
In the morning I wake up as my lights emulate the sunrise and my speakers slowly increase in volume.
I get notifications on my phone when the washing machine or dishwasher is done, plants need watering, accidentally leave the front door open, or if the robot vacuum will go that day (and I need to remove all the socks from the floor).
When I leave, everything automatically turns off (TV, speakers, heating, lights) and when I get home, it's already pre-heated and the music transfers from my headphones to the speakers.
All of this runs on Home Assistant, an open-source Python package that is currently the 10th biggest project on GitHub (in terms of contributors).
I am an active contributor to the project and a big user myself.
I will talk about a host of things, Python, YAML, the open-source community, and device interaction.

Sander van de Graaf - Detecting outages at scale
Sometimes the internet is having a bad day, and Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp doesn't work. You and countless of other people rush to downdetector.com to check if that's really the case. This our story about how we make our service scale for such peak moments. (following topics will be discussed: Kinesis, DynamoDB, Api Gateway, Lambda, Serverless Framework, Python red.)

Ambar - personal Github projects

  • Make my day planner: How I used the google calendar API and a pinch of python to practice deep work.
  • Sorting performance : During the recent spate of AH football cards collection I started thinking what is the best way to sort all the cards we collected and updated daily. I started researching well known sorting algorithms to figure out what methods we were using. Once that was done, we put it to the test, first in python and then in real life!
