19.00 – 19.45 uur Talk 1:
How can we make BGP more secure? - Tim Bruijnzeels
The internet consists of thousands of networks that are connected to each other using the BGP protocol. However, BGP itself is very insecure. This means that network traffic can be redirected accidentally or deliberately. In this presentation, Tim gives a brief introduction to BGP, explains how BGP can be made more secure using the IRR (Internet Routing Registry) and the RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure), and describes the role played by the RIPE NCC in this regard.

Over Tim Bruijnzeels
Tim is Principal Software Engineer RPKI at the RIPE NCC. He has been involved in RPKI standards development and software implementation for well over 10 years. A number of IETF RFCs related to RPKI carry his name. Tim first got involved in this work as a software developer for RIPE NCC. Later, he became the lead technical project manager for various RIPE NCC services, with the strongest focus remaining on RPKI and the whois. Tim worked for NLnet Labs from 2018 to 2024 where he worked on the development of the open-source RPKI server implementation, Krill.

19.45 – 20.30 uur Talk 2:
We have BGPsec, why bother with RPKI? - Martin Hoffmann
BGPsec offers routing security through cryptographic verification of route announcements within BGP itself which sounds as if it could replace the security mechanisms offered by RPKI. But does it really? This talk will explore how BGPsec works, why it isn’t widely deployed yet and whether it ever will be, how it interacts with RPKI, and finally whether it can replace RPKI.

Over Martin Hoffmann
Marthin Hoffmann is a software engineer at NLnet Labs. He is a core developer of the RPKI-related projects such as Routinator and Krill. He also dabbled in DNS and, in a previous life, in VoIP.

20.30 - 21.00 uur: Napraten onder het genot van een borrel.
