Open-Mindedness

We like to think of open-mindedness as a simple choice — decide to listen, decide to reconsider, decide to be flexible. But the issues that matter most to us are usually the ones we cannot see in ourselves. They hide precisely where we are least willing to look: in the beliefs we hold dearest, the values that anchor us, the way we've chosen to live.

This is the paradox at the heart of open-mindedness. We are quickest to name others as stubborn, closed, unreasonable — and slowest to recognize that same rigidity when it concerns ourselves.

So let's talk about it. Not to win an argument or change anyone's mind — but testing our convictions and to see them more clearly, through the presence and questions of others.
