Mark your calendars for the 10th of October, 2024. The next Pie & AI event from The Hague AI takes place, sponsored by deeplearning.ai and the Applied Data Science & AI department of the Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Join us for an inspiring evening where technology meets sustainability at the "AI for Good" event. This special occasion is dedicated to exploring the remarkable ways in which artificial intelligence is being harnessed to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

The first presentation will focus on the transformative role of AutoML and earth observation data in combating climate change. Our next guest speaker will tell you about the cutting-edge AI systems being deployed in Africa to combat poaching of endangered species like elephants and rhinos.

Oh, and there will be pie!

Seats are limited, so sign up fast!

Agenda:
5:00pm-6:00pm: Doors open + pie and refreshments
6:00pm-6:10pm: Introduction
6:10pm-6:50pm: First speaker + Q&A
7:00pm-7:40pm: Second speaker + Q&A
7:40pm-10:00pm: Mingle with your fellow deep learners!

Speaker bio and their topics:

Speaker 1: Julia Wąsala

Topic: AutoML for super-resolution of earth observation data

ML techniques help us solve new problems and use the increasing amount of data we get from satellites orbiting the earth. However, the task of designing new models for each task requires a lot of expertise in machine learning. We can overcome this problem by automatically designing machine learning models using automated machine learning, a field of research that focuses on designing algorithms that automatically select and configure machine learning models. Besides helping us achieve better results faster, AutoML techniques help make ML more accessible to domain experts who want to use ML for different tasks related to Earth Observation. We show that we can automatically design good neural networks for an important Earth Observation pre-processing task, super-resolution, and discuss which factors are important to consider when designing AutoML systems for Earth Observation.

Bio: Julia is a PhD student in Computer Science at Leiden University and SRON, in collaboration with ESA Phi-Lab. She works on the design of Automated Machine Learning systems for satellite imagery. Julia loves being able to collaborate with Earth Observation domain experts and apply computer science to pressing problems like climate change.

Speaker 2: Thijs Suijten

Title: Hacking innovation with Céline Dion

Go on a journey throughout Africa, where we have been using new inventions to protect elephants and rhinos. You’ll learn why this is important and how we are “hacking” our innovation process to come up with pragmatic field-ready solutions to help rangers in national parks. Aside from occasionally being chased by an elephant 😱 I will share some of our successes and challenges to transform your perspective on how you can make an impact in the most unexpected places.
