Fircroft College, Selly Oak, Birmingham Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th July 2011

We missed systemic risks. So said a group of eminent economists in a letter to the Queen, explaining why they had not spotted the credit crunch coming. What system? What risks? Assuming the economists are right, does this not demand that we think about changing the system instead of tinkering with it or changing the people in the top jobs? We are currently living through the most serious crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s – a crisis with economic, ecological, social and political dimensions. At our annual weekend of talks and discussion, the Socialist Party will be examining our predicament in all these dimensions, and considering whether system change is a practical response to humanity’s problems.
