On Thursday January 1st from 2:00pm to 6:00pm Jennifer N. will be hosting a New Years Day Euchre and Potluck at her house to celebrate kicking off the 2026 Euchre New Year! When you RSVP please simply list what you'll be bringing as a side dish so Jen knows what to expect. Remember to bring your beverage of choice as well. There is visitor parking spots available on Manchester Way as well as Bedlington Terrace. Feel free to drop off something at the house first and then find parking. Every member of the Alexandria Euchre Club must know how to play the game of Euchre to attend a meetup. If you know the game, but it has been years since you've played, that is fine as we've all been there and will be patient while it all comes back to you. 2. We have a number of casual games going on all night. We also play stick the dealer (ask if you don't know this variation). 3. Euchre is a 4 person game. What this means is that if you sign-up, we are counting on you to be there. Please be considerate and make your final decision as soon as possible. The deadline for RSVP is 2 days prior to the meet-up. Please update by that time, especially if you are going to cancel your RSVP. This allows some time to try and fill out the tables. Of course, we understand that you may get sick on the day. We are happy to have you stay home if you get sick. 4. There are some costs associated with meetup--I have to pay Meetup every 6 months for listing on their website. They don't work off of advertising fees. We pass the bowl around and ask people to throw a $1 in each time they come.

PVSC's 12th Annual New Year's Day Samoyed Flash Mob will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Christmas tree on the U.S. Capitol's West Lawn. We'll hang out there until 11:45 a.m., or so, and will do a group photo before beginning a walk to the Washington Monument. Every Samoyed enthusiast is welcome! **The event will happen -- regardless of the weather. **Our Samoyeds are winter weatherproof! We encourage the wearing of jingle bells on the dogs and other festive attire! The food kiosks on the Mall should be open and they serve hot beverages. Parking around the Capitol Reflecting Pool is free and should be plentiful during the morning. __P.S. Please do not bring Flexi-leashes_, they don't work well with a large group of dogs. Thanks!

Happy New Year, Adventurers! Continuing a tradition that started in 1991, Adventuring's first hike of the New Year will be at the Great Falls of the Potomac, arguably the most spectacular natural wonder in the National Capital Area. 2026 being an even year, we will focus on the Maryland side of Great Falls. We will gather at Great Falls Tavern and head upstream along the C&O Canal towpath, with the Canal on one side and the Potomac River on the other. After a couple of miles we will reach Swains Lock, a scenic and historic spot which should have enough picnic tables for our lunch. After lunch we'll retrace our steps back to the Tavern. Some of us may want to continue downstream a short ways past the Tavern to the trail leading to the Falls Overlook, while others may skip the Overlook and head out right away. Total length of this easy, level round-trip hike will be about 5 miles. If the weather cooperates, a stop at the beer garden at nearby Old Anglers Inn on MacArthur Boulevard may be in order. Warming up at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo may also be a tempting after-hike option. Those wishing to participate in our carpool either as drivers or passengers will gather by the Panera on Wisconsin Avenue by the Tenleytown Metro Station at 11 a.m. Passengers will give their drivers $5. Those wishing to drive directly to Great Falls should plan to be at the Tavern by 11:45 to rendezvous with the carpoolers. Everyone should expect to pay the $20/vehicle admission fee at the entrance to Great Falls unless you or someone else in your vehicle has a Park Pass. (Historically, most vehicles in our carpool have included someone with a Pass.) Bring beverages, lunch, mud-worthy hiking boots, and the $5 Adventuring trip fee, and dress in layers. A Starfinder Society Scenario designed for 1st- through 2nd-level characters, playable in 2-3 hours. First Seeker Sarmak has called on the scientist Dr. Heldin Sevaille to create an inoculation for an process known as “conversion” which is transforming wildlife and residents of the Sloughscar Hills into monsters in the service of the Wreck of the Returned. The final ingredient Dr. Sevaille requires is found in a remote forest called Ste Xinnith on Marata, one of Bretheda’s moons. Dr. Sevaille dispatches a team of Starfinders to collect samples of this rare plant with the aid of a few local scientists. But trouble is brewing in Ste Xinnith… Frozen Trove, a Triaxian biotech corporation notorious for unethical and illegal methods that damage environments to maximize profits, has established a laboratory in the area, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. With the entire ecosystem at risk, it’s time for the Starfinders to take a stand. This is an adventure in the ongoing Invasion's Edge metaplot. Written by Sara Jeffers.

For January's game of the month we are playing the platformer "Return of the Obra Dinn." From the devs: *In 1802, the merchant ship Obra Dinn set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods. Six months later it hadn't met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea.* *Early this morning of October 14th, 1807, the Obra Dinn drifted into port at Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew. As insurance investigator for the East India Company's London Office, dispatch immediately to Falmouth, find means to board the ship, and prepare an assessment of damages.* It is available for PC, Mac, Switch, PS4, and Xbox. Socrates Café meets twice a month. Though this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, morality, and the first principles of things. Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey. When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break.
