Mini Relief Two-Part Class
Mini Relief Two-Part Class
Mini Relief Two-Part Class Tuesdays from 7PM to 9:30PM Session 1: Jan 6 & 20 \| Session 2: Jan 13 & 27 Session 1 serves as an introduction to relief through the easy cut method with a rubber stamp medium block. Participants will practice hand printing on Japanese paper through multiple iterations, and then proceed to mount their images. Completing these exercises will demonstrate how different blocks can be used interchangeably in a modular format, which will prepare them for creating a small book. All materials will be provided as part of the registration fee. Session 2 will involve collaboration among participants to create an accordion-style book utilizing blocks made in session one. There will be an opportunity to refine blocks and make artistic choices as a group to determine how the different compositions can be incorporated into a completed piece. Additionally, new printing techniques like rainbow rolls will be introduced to provide variety. All materials will be provided as part of the registration fee, and participants are encouraged to bring their materials from session one.

An elderly British aristocrat asks his nephew, a young American man, to embark on a mission started five centuries ago by their ancestor. Evidence suggests that the long-ago explorer found an unknown element that was the key to immortality, an element contained in what is called the flame of life, but he never returned from the expedition with the secret. The nephew agrees, and as he travels to mysterious regions he meets a man who’ll provide guidance on the condition that he gets a cut of whatever treasure they find. His daughter joins the group and proves to be a major distraction. The story is by H. Rider Haggard, a popular writer of adventure fiction whose works include *King Solomon’s Mines* and a series of books featuring audacious explorer Alan Quartermain. His novel *She* has been filmed several times; this is the first, and it features remarkable special effects for a movie from the 1930s. Although it was filmed in black-and-white, all online recordings of this film are colorized. ■ Title — *She* ■ Directors — Lansing C. Wednesday evening Mindfulness at Unity of Gaithersburg.
Wednesday evening Mindfulness at Unity of Gaithersburg.
Mindfulness Meditation group practice every Wednesday evening at Unity of Gaithersburg. Mindfulness practice is not about achieving some special state of mind; it is more about noticing the experience you are having without trying to change it. This interesting video suggests why you might sit and watch your mind wander off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmmBF8eTl18 This noticing tends to shift your nervous system from a 'fight-or-flight' state to a more relaxed and receptive state. In this receptive mental state, you begin to see your own experience differently and, over time, see other people and the world differently. Also, it is good for you: "the effect of regular meditation on the cortex was so profound that fifty-year-old meditators had a prefrontal cortex that looked like that of a twenty-five-year-old" [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLRZVTT](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLRZVTT) Here is an interesting and funny take on meditation by Ajahn Brahm: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR60RRmXeYs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR60RRmXeYs). If you arrive on time, there will be an introduction at the beginning, if you arrive late, find a chair and join us. There will be some discussion after. This is a free event, but contributions to the church's expenses are welcome. You can just show up this Wednesday or subsequent Wednesdays. SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Japanese Ghost Stories
SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Japanese Ghost Stories
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no additional tickets will be available at the door.** [Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Japanese Ghost Stories,”** with Brittany Warman, former instructor at Ohio State University and co-founder of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-japanese-ghost-stories](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-japanese-ghost-stories) .] Spend a winter night feeling chills down your spine. Join folklorist Brittany Warman, a favorite of Profs and Pints audiences, for a look at the eerie ghost stories of Japan. You’ll get acquainted with several spirits and creatures that populate traditional Japanese folklore, among them: The *Yuki-Onna,* the sinister snow woman who dances on a knife-edge between murder and mercy. A fabulously beautiful samurai daughter who demands bravery and intellect from her future husband—but actually just might be a goblin. The spirit that haunts the cherry blossom tree, whose irresistible melancholy is “the phantom light of long-expired suns.” You’ll also learn about the incredible life of Koizumi Yakumo, the storyteller who first made these traditional tales available to western audiences and helped popularize them around the world. Born in 1850 under the name of Lafcadio Hearn to an Irish officer-surgeon and a Greek woman, he led a wildly unconventional life. He travelled from Greece to the slums of Dublin to the newspaper offices of Cincinnati to the kitchens of New Orleans before settling in Japan, where he adopted Japanese citizenship and changed his name. His life as a permanent outsider—and the hatred of prejudice instilled in him by it—shaped him as a storyteller. He became both a conduit of Japanese culture and a champion of the chilling and uncanny. This deep dive in his life and the ghost stories he gathered and retold will be by turns frightening, hilarious, baffling, and poignant, and will make you understand why his tales remain beloved in Japan and the world over. It’s a great opportunity to become familiar with the ghosts of a nation and the man who told them to the world. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: A Japanese *Yuki-Onna*, or snow spirit, as depicted in the 1737 *Hyakkai-Zukan,* or book of demons, by Sawaki Suushi.

Spirit Island (6pm start)
Spirit Island (6pm start)
*In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As the great powers of Europe stretch their colonial empires further and further, they will inevitably lay claim to a place where spirits still hold power - and when they do, the land itself will fight back alongside the islanders who live there.* ***Spirit Island*** is a complex and thematic cooperative game about defending your island home from colonizing Invaders. Players are different spirits of the land, each with its own unique elemental powers. Every turn, players simultaneously choose which of their power cards to play, paying energy to do so. Using combinations of power cards that match a spirit's elemental affinities can grant free bonus effects. Faster powers take effect immediately, before the Invaders spread and ravage, but other magics are slower, requiring forethought and planning to use effectively. In the Spirit phase, spirits gain energy, and choose how / whether to Grow: to reclaim used power cards, to seek for new power, or to spread presence into new areas of the island.
Meetup #40: Who for What Ails You
Meetup #40: Who for What Ails You
**NOTE: Meetup is SUNDAY this month!** Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone had a fun and restful holiday - and you didn't get sick. Because, yea, it's that time of year where we all get a sniffle or two and sure do wish for a miracle cure. So, for this month, let's choose from some episodes that put the "Doctor" in Doctor Who.... *The Moonbase* \- The Second Doctor\, Ben\, Polly\, and Jamie arrive on the moon to discover a crew of international stereotypes beset by a mysterious space plague\. The Doctor experiments and Polly makes coffee while on the other side of the moon mysterious silver giants lurk\.\.\.\. \[This story has 2 live action episodes and 2 animated episodes\.\] *The Invisible Enemy -* The 4th Doctor and Leela pick up a nasty virus in space, and they are going to need an extra large dose of Theraflu because this virus grows into a giant shrimp and attacks them at the hospital. Fortunately, K-9 is there to help in his first ever appearance. *The Caves of Androzani -* The 5th Doctor and Peri arrive on a planet and immediately step in it - where "it" is a bat's nest that infects them with a deadly disease. The Doctor must race against time and a whole bunch of not-so-nice people to find the cure. *Curse of the Black Spot/Praxeus* \- The 11th Doctor\, Amy\, and Rory arrive on a pirate ship where even the slightest sign of illness or injury leads to apparent death\.\.\. or does it? Then\, the 13th Doctor and Fam investigate a mysterious global infection and get tangled up with a whole lotta birds\. When you RSVP, please rank the four options above in the comments in the order of preference (1 being "Yes! I am dying to see it!" and 4 being "Meh."), and we will abide by the choice of the attendees. For the Meetup itself, we ask everyone to bring something to drink and something to eat (snacks/munchies - you don't need to bring a whole ham or something!) to share with the group. We'll have food and drink as well and maybe a themed cocktail if the inspiration strikes... We are a couple blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro (15th and Harvard NW). We'll provide the full address ahead of the event. Note also that we are a walk-up - two flights of stairs. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

We'd love to have you join us. COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant. *** Did you know that there are atheists everywhere?!?! You may not know it, but we are! We're in your schools, diners, police force, military, government, and some are even still in your churches! So come and join us and meet other local atheists, along with agnostics, heathens, humanists, skeptics, and anyone else who's 'hell bound'! Vision: a Central Ohio that accepts atheism as a viable alternative in all areas of public and private life. Mission: grow, support, and provide community for atheists in Central Ohio. AoC was founded in 2012 as a networking, social group for Central Ohio area humanists, skeptics, atheists, agnostics, nonbelievers, freethinkers, and the curious. It was a member of Columbus CoR and held weekly meetings, mostly on Fridays, for several years but then operated as an online only group for some time. In November 2018, Omnipresent Atheists (OA), a group that routinely meets on Tuesdays, invited AoC to merge. Omnipresent Atheists is a member of the Columbus Coalition of Reason (ColumbusCoR.org).
