About the event

Speculative Design and Fiction often show us what our world could have been, if things had gone slightly differently. These alternative, sprawling worlds with curious rules, baffling technologies, and strange social norms allow us to reconsider our own world and our relationship with it; and decide on actions to head towards a preferable future.

In this session, Designer and Technologist Viraj Joshi will speak through his fictional films and not-so-fictional design work, and his year-long project “Postcards from the Future”, where he worked with 21 historians, futurists, writers, curators, and other creatives to produce 30 alternative visions for our future.

Later, Viraj will introduce techniques and frameworks he has come up with to produce a new vision for a speculative world live in the session along with the participants – constructed entirely live!

Viraj who?

Viraj Joshi is a designer and technologist, who makes curious objects and fiction with great affinity towards our technological and social futures. He currently works at Fjord, Stockholm. His major masters project, AirWire (2018), a gesture-driven computer interaction technology, was exhibited at the Science Museum in London, and London Design Festival; and his recent design fiction film, The Utopia Compass (2020) was exhibited with United Nations' Futuring Peace exhibition.
