Talk 1: Pitfalls of Starting a Big Project Without the Right Experience

A bit more than a year ago I joined a new team that had just started on a new big project, using technologies that were new to them and me.

I did a course on SpringBoot to get an understanding of it, which taught us, for example, to use technical packaging. That turns out to be fine for a small service, although after a year of new features, it became a mess. How can we fix it and what did we learn?

In this talk I’ll share my experience on what went wrong, what we did to fix it, and steps to prevent similar situations in future!

About Jonathan Stronkhorst. Jonathan is a Java Developer focusing on building cool services at the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB). At the SVB he organizes a lot of knowledge sharing sessions and is now sharing his own stories too.

Talk 2: From Boot to Quark: Discovering the Subatomic Life of Quarkus

In the ever-evolving landscape of Java development, embracing new frameworks can feel akin to embarking on a thrilling yet daunting journey. This talk explores it from the well-trodden paths of the SpringBoot ecosystem to the dynamic and modern realm of Quarkus.

Initially drawn by Quarkus's promise of optimized performance for Cloud computing and serverless architectures, Zoran explores its features, uncovering both the rewarding perks and the formidable challenges. From the benefits of fast startup times and low memory footprint to the hurdles of migrating existing applications and integrating with legacy systems, this session offers a candid and insightful experience through the subatomic intricacies of Quarkus.

Whether you're contemplating a similar transition or simply curious about the cutting-edge trends in Java development, join Zoran for a thought-provoking discussion on the pros and cons of this transformative experience.

About Zoran Arsovski. Zoran is a Senior Software Engineer at iO Digital Agency, working at IKEA.

Talk 3: Hazelcast + Kubernetes with Java

In Kubernetes environments, managing a stateful cache for an application can be both challenging and costly.

In this talk, we’ll address these issues by presenting Hazelcast as a solution for embedding a distributed cache into your application. We’ll explore how Hazelcast enables stateful caching, enhancing both performance and cost-efficiency.

You’ll learn practical steps for configuring and using Hazelcast, along with common pitfalls and how to overcome them. Join us to discover how integrating Hazelcast into your Kubernetes setup can streamline cache management and boost overall system performance.

About Himanshu Maheshwari. Himanshu is a Software engineer at Miro.
