Privacy by design: key take-aways for GDPR compliance

Privacy by design, or more precisely “Data Protection by Design & by Default”, is one of the main requirements from the GDPR. When new processes or systems are being developed, the principle of privacy by design needs to be taken into account. But how? How can this be achieved in practice? How does this e.g. relate to Data Protection Impact Assessments? Although the European Supervisory Authorities issued guidance on this last year, there is still much unclear in this respect.
This will be discussed during the session, as well as some key take-aways to apply privacy by design in practice.

About the speaker: Vonne Laan is lawyer and partner at The Data Lawyers. She assists Dutch and international clients with various matters in the field of privacy, data protection and cybersecurity. She provides strategic advice that aligns commercial goals with compliance obligations. Next to this, Vonne is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars, and gives guest lectures at Nyenrode Business University and the Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. Vonne also has many legal publications to her name and is the author of the privacy law edition of a Dutch standard book series (Boom Basics Privacyrecht). She is furthermore an active member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), currently acting as the Co-Chair for the Dutch chapter.
