IntelliJ IDEA Tips & Tricks / Parsing a Billion Records in 2 Seconds
Details
Another Rotterdam JUG meetup is now scheduled.
For the second time our co-host is Developers.nl, a Dutch software development company from Rotterdam with, next to PHP, frontend and Python, also a big group of Java developers.
Again we have two amazing speakers, both of which spoke at Devoxx UK 2024 (and a lot of other conferences!). First, we have Anton Arhipov, who will discuss "IntelliJ IDEA Tips & Tricks". Then, we have Roy van Rijn, who will dive into "Pushing Java to the Limits: Processing a Billion Rows in under 2 Seconds".
And we'll finish with some networking and drinks.
Schedule:
17:30: Doors are open, food and drinks, welcome!
18:30: IntelliJ IDEA Tips & Tricks by Anton Arhipov
IntelliJ IDEA is packed with useful features that enhance developer productivity and simplify working with the code. This session takes you through the cool features of IntelliJ IDEA: refactorings, shortcuts, fast navigation, code completion kung-fu, live templates, structured search, the debugger that is a gem on its own, and other productivity features that the IDE provides.
19:30: Pushing Java to the Limits: Processing a Billion Rows in under 2 Seconds by Roy van Rijn
In January a challenge was posted online by Gunnar Morling: How fast can you parse a file with one billion rows of weather data using Java?
This deceivingly simple question would lead Roy down a path that taught him all about: parallelism, memory mapped files, SWAR techniques (SIMD as a register), bit twiddling, branchless code, mechanical sympathy, Graal native compilation and finally... even turning to the dark side: using *sun.misc.Unsafe*.
In this talk he'll explain all the code he wrote and tricks that took him from the reference implementation that runs in >4 minutes to processing everything in under two seconds.
Who knew Java could be this fast?
20:30: Networking with some drinks
21:00: Time to go home.
Our guest speakers:
Anton Arhipov is a Developer Advocate at JetBrains, specializing in productivity tools and techniques for Java developers. He is well-known for his work on IntelliJ IDEA and has spoken at numerous international conferences about improving developer workflows and experiences.
Roy van Rijn works for OpenValue and is a Java Champion and regular speaker at conferences like Devoxx, GOTO and J-Fall. He enjoys playing around with algorithms, performance optimization, math, cryptography and much more.
Location:
*Developers.nl* has offered to host this event in their headquarters. Across the road from the famous "Kuip", the home of Feyenoord.
The address is:
Stadionweg 57C
3077 AS Rotterdam
Venue is next to "de Kuip" in Rotterdam, if there isn't a soccer match you can park there. Also close to several tram stops.
See you there?
