Introduction
Ready to step into the wild, watery borderland of the Grensmaas?
This time we trade the hills for horizons and follow the Meuse all the way to the edge of Belgium — where the river quietly draws the line between two countries and nature does exactly as it pleases.
Koningssteen is one of the oldest rewilded reserves of the RivierPark Maasvallei: a patchwork of glittering gravel lakes, flowery grasslands, marshes and dense floodplain forest, shared across the border by Limburgs Landschap and Natuurmonumenten. Wild Konik horses and shaggy Galloway cattle roam free here, beavers have left their teeth-marks along the banks, and the birdlife is something else — grebes, cuckoos, orioles and dozens of butterfly species call it home.

Whether you prefer to soak in the scenery in peaceful silence, or you're the type who can't help striking up a conversation with everyone on the trail — there's a place for you here!

There is a parking near the trail, Google Maps, Apple Maps.

You can see the hiking path on Komoot.
The route is approximately 15 km long with only about 30 m of elevation gain and is rated moderate. Expect around 3.5–4 hours of walking time.

🎒 What to Bring

  • Sturdy hiking shoes 🥾 with good grip — most of this route runs on natural and gravel surfaces through riverside nature reserves, with a wooden boardwalk and sections that can get muddy or wet after rain.
  • A waterproof poncho or jacket in case of rain — out on the open riverbank an umbrella won't stand a chance against the wind! If you carry a backpack you might need a rain cover for it too.
  • Water and lunch or snacks to keep your energy up — there are few or no facilities along the way, so bring what you need.

👉 Important

  • Please do not bring pets.
  • The hike will go ahead rain or shine, a little drizzle is part of the adventure!
  • In case of a code orange or red weather warning the hike will be canceled even with short notice.
  • After heavy rain or high water on the Meuse, parts of the reserve loop can flood — we'll adapt the route on the day if needed.
  • We'll be walking through open grazing areas where Konik horses and Galloway cattle roam freely — please keep your distance and don't approach or feed them.
  • This is a moderate trail: the challenge is the distance and the soft, uneven natural ground rather than any climbing — please assess your fitness level accordingly.
