Re: [newtech-1] collecting business debts

Alex,

The amount is fairly small, and I don't know whether a lawyer would take the case on contingency.  The one lawyer I spoke with would not. I am considering a collection agency because it would take less of my time than going to small claims court.  I understand that the collection agencies charge about 25%, which seems like a good deal to me. A freelancer needs a collection agency when her client does not pay his bill.

Susan, if its a onetime deal, consider the amount and whether its worth your time. Depends on what you are responsible for revenue wise. I otherwise recommend a good lawyer that will take this on in exchange for a portion of it. Personally, Id give this away to my lawyer in exchange for retainer on locking up my business such that this doesnt happen again. I can recommend someone offline that has done this kind of work before.

However, if its more than 1 incident, consider taking a closer look at your billing practices.

I am not sure how freelancers need a collection agency. A topic for debate I guess.

Regards,
Alex

This topic has come up before, and I saved a message recommending D&B collection services.  However, D&B has stopped offering these services.  I would like to find a company that will do the job without being sleazy -- hopefully this is possible.  Has anyone worked with a good collection agency?

Susan
