Hackathons seem like a cool place to get in deep with a given tech and it's goals. A founder with a solid concept and some seed could use these to feel out the correct platform and technology minds to get to Porto. A founder with a proto could use these to feel out the correct platform and technology minds to get to release.
A dev could use these to buddy up with some like-minded guys to form a tight knit team to get some ideas circulating and maybe find a tech-exercise project that becomes the next big thing..
If you believe Hollywood, Facebook used these to weed out their first employees...
