Dear Frank:

You have many options open to you.

1. Change the rate at which you get these emails. You can instead receive a daily digest of all activity on the list by clicking here, or you can even opt-out from receiving email at from the mailing list by clicking here. (Both links are also at the bottom of every email you receive via the mailing list.)

2. Realise that this mailing list has been around for many many years, and that it generally has succeeded at its mission, long before you arrived...and that a huge part of the reason it has succeeded is because it can and does incorporate all sorts of input. I personally think it is unfair to categorise the few emails you have received as "insignificant" or as "being bombarded". But I suppose one's mileage may vary.

3. Realise that "it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness" and that "you have to become the change you want to see in the world". Your very first contribution to this mailing list was of you whinging about a thing which you can quite easily control (see option 1, above). Perhaps you should have considered introducing yourself to the list and letting us know what value you can add to it via the services you may be able to provide instead? Because those "business plugs" do enable all of us to know what is available and who can provide those services, which leads to plenty of offline interaction and business being done, unbeknownst to you as a newbie.

4. Yes, you are right. "Meetup" means to meet up in person. But first one has to communicate in some way with the other people one wishes to meet-up with, no? And that is what email, and email lists, are for. So perhaps instead of joining a mailing list, you should have just added a recurring event titled "NYTM Meetup", scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month, to your calendar.

Hope this helps.

Eddie

I just joined the group aand now I am being bombarded by insignificant emails and "business plugs".   I want to participate in the events, but I do not need pen-pals or mindless Facebook type emails!    If a person wishes to discuss a particular technical or software issue, there are many other forums and sites on the net that covers such issues.   Meetup means to "meet up" in person!!
