At this point, google crowdsources traffic intelligence by analyzing velocity data from their infinite GPS user base.

waze data just added to that analysis

Waze is crowd sourced traffic data.  Waze is generating the traffic data and doing so on a scale and accuracy not possible with non-crowd sourced traffic data technology that is deployed today.

Google Maps was a map that happened to have traffic data from other sources in it.  Now it has Waze data in it.

Perhaps Google could have created their own crowd source traffic data product but integrating the features into Google Maps.   But they choose to buy Waze instead.

Google Maps and Waze are different animals.

Sorry, I don't think that that example is valid, Patrick.

Google Maps did not have the information Waze provided, which is likely one reason why Google bought Waze.

The reporting features on Waze are the differentiators for people who get behind a car & travel frequently, and it seemed pretty obvious that those were the selling points.

IMO and YMMV, of course.

For me Google Maps is equivalent since they are both pretty good at understanding the destination and both take traffic into consideration. It's true that Google Maps added traffic considerations only in 2011 so when Waze got started in 2009 that WAS a huge differentiator.  Also, Waze add the ability for users to report accidents, police presence, speed cameras and blocked roads and while these features are not essential for me perhaps they have great appeal to others. With the benefit of hindsight of course Waze did innovate compared to existing alternatives, I just think it just wasn't *that* obvious back then.

What is the pre-existing analog to Waze?
