Sorry, I don't think that that example is valid, Patrick.
Google Maps did not have the information Waze provided, which is likely one reason why Google bought Waze.
The reporting features on Waze are the differentiators for people who get behind a car & travel frequently, and it seemed pretty obvious that those were the selling points.
IMO and YMMV, of course.

It's true that Google Maps added traffic considerations only in 2011 so when Waze got started in 2009 that WAS a huge differentiator. Also, Waze add the ability for users to report accidents, police presence, speed cameras and blocked roads and while these features are not essential for me perhaps they have great appeal to others. With the benefit of hindsight of course Waze did innovate compared to existing alternatives, I just think it just wasn't *that* obvious back then.
