Chris pine's "learn to program" total beginner but not too basic, some hard examples in there.

Peter cooper's "beginning ruby" great starting intro.

But my fav, although not beginner necessarily is "eloquent ruby" by Russ Olsen. Goes deep, but explains in a very clear and understandable way. Meta programming didn't seem so mystifying after reading this book, for example.

Hated the prag prog "pick ax" book, more of a reference book, than a how to use ruby...

Best,
Kevin Kornemann

The Dummies book for beginners on ruby feels more like lets talk about whats we can do with ruby over hey lets work together and make ruby.

For a list of resources (working from Ruby up to Rails), I'd recommend Flatiron School's prework. I attended in 2012, and the Prework is a great, open-source list of areas to study for full stack RoR.

Also, Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby by Sandi Metz as a great, accessible book for becoming a better programmer. There's a related GoRuCo 2011 Talk video that I would also recommend.

Also does anyone have any resources we can use to learn to program other than codecademy

I am not a complete beginner but I can use some help as well as help out new beginners. I am also in Queens.

I am looking to learn RoR with others who are also trying to learn this. If anyone is open to learning/studying RoR during the summer, please message me. We could meet at places with wifi, go through some video courses / ebooks, and get good at RoR.
