The Taiwanese Cultural Meetup and SPH Mandarin Fellowship presents Taiwanese documentary - 自由畫師 Freedom of the Artist.

28th of February is the 72nd anniversary of the 228 massacre, therefore we are bringing a 228-related film for this month's screening. We hope to look back on the history and remember the sacrifice of people who tried to fight for freedom, to better the lives of everyone.

The documentary captured how artist, Chen Wu Zhen, lost his passion about painting after being jailed for offending the government, but realised that he should fight back for his dignity. He then started to create art pieces for/about human right, and many white-terror and 228-related works.

#Schedule

As this is a joint event with the Mandarin Fellowship, there will be a prayers session from 6:30. If you wish not to participate in this session, you are welcome to come at 6:45, or just enjoy the refreshments while the prayers is on.

There will be a short introduction of the film and a bit of the back ground history before the film. The film starts at 7pm and ends in an hour. After the film, there'll be a social session for everyone to chat over a cuppa.

All are welcome regardless of the religion, nationality, and being a student or not.

今年是 #二二八事件 的第七十二週年，二二八不只是一場屠殺，更徹底的改變了臺灣的命運，在這一連串的事件與鎮壓當中，最容易被遺忘卻又最重要的事件之一，是三月八日的蔣介石軍隊抵達後，無差別血洗基隆港，並開啟了血腥鎮壓全臺。於是我們選在這一天播放陳榮顯及張永明導演的紀錄片【#自由畫師】，講述白色恐怖時受到迫害的臺灣畫家陳武鎮的故事。

畫家陳武鎮自小就熱愛藝術，雖家中經濟環境不佳，仍以美術為志，年輕時就讀美術系努力不懈。他對藝術奉獻的同時，也關注當時社會的不公。當時正值白色恐怖時期的中段，陳武鎮於當兵時竟因冒犯當時政府而入獄兩年，他繼而成為監獄中刑期最短最年輕的政治犯。那時讓他自認前程已毀，出獄後隱身於小學教導兒童美術，放下畫筆，不再創作。直到某天，他自覺應為自己被奪走的尊嚴作出反擊，重拾畫筆，用畫筆力求證明自己當年入獄是個錯誤。

藝術家簡介
畫家陳武鎮曾因白色恐怖入獄兩年，自國小教師退休後，便開始以奔放的熱情，創作以白色恐怖為題材的人權系列畫作，包括2007年的《夢回泰源》、2008年的《虛擬巨惡》與2010年的《判決書》。
