Welcome, fellow Rustaceans!
We are Rust Vienna, a group of local developers and enthusiasts who want to share and exchange knowledge, experience and ideas about the Rust programming language. We meet regularly to present our projects, experiences, ideas and more.
You can submit talks on our Sessionize page. You will find all details regarding holding a talk there. Alternatively, you may also contact us directly via email if you're not a fan of filling out forms; the address can also be found on the Sessionize page.
Anyone may submit talks, so if you'd like to share anything in regards to Rust, whether it be a project you're working on, a concept that you'd like to explain, an idea you want to present or a library you want to introduce people to, please let us know!
Code of Conduct
We orient ourselves according to the official rust community standard:
-Â https://www.rust-lang.org/en-US/conduct.html
which can be roughly summarized into the following points:
- We want an in every way diverse community
- We prefer cooperation over competition
- We want us to be nice to each other
- Even if we don't like each other, we want us to be at least courteous with each other

Rust Vienna S2E2 - December | at metalab 🦀
Metalab, RathausstraĂźe 6, 1010 Vienna, Vienna, ATWe're keeping the ball rolling: Rust Vienna returns once again to metalab, this time with three amazing talks.
When? Thursday, December 4th, 18:00
Where? metalab Vienna
As per usual, it's going to be a lovely evening with drinks, pizza and talks 🚀🦀
== Agenda ==
Note: This agenda / schedule is approximate.
18:00: Arrivals
18:15: Opening Address
18:20: Michael Kefeder — Learnings from writing a low power BLE firmware for nrf52 using Rust
Michael will give you an overview of what happens when you're tasked to write a firmware for a custom embedded device that is supposed to run on a single battery-charge for many months. He will explain how this can be done using Rust and discuss which option he chose, followed by a demonstration on how to measure the current used by the MCU and the fun details one discovers doing so.
19:00: Short Break — Grab a Drink!
19:10: David Peherstorfer — Medical Visualization in Rust: From 2D Slices to 3D Multiplanar Reconstruction
Medical Visualization is a topic near and dear to David's heart. He will show how medical images are loaded and transformed to be usable in a Multiplanar Reconstruction (MPR) visualization. This talk serves as an introduction to Medical Visualization, showcasing how Rust's ecosystem can deliver the performance to support medical personnel in their day-to-day work. We will hit some performance bottlenecks that we will solve on our way and you'll see the evolution from a slow initial implementation to a performant solution.
19:50: Long Break — Food, Drinks & Socializing 🍕
20:20: Michael Kefeder — Rust's enum, now that's sum type!
Starting with the modest enum, as known from C and C++, Michael will show that this data type in Rust can do the same as in C or C++ — and then some. With the help of some code examples you'll discover the power and pitfalls of the modern programming patterns it allows.
21:00: Closing Address
21:30: Wrapping up; Last Drinks
We're looking forward to seeing you all again! 🦀
