Pionera del gótico y de la ciencia ficción, fue hija del filósofo radical William Godwin y de la pensadora Mary Wollstonecraft, autora de *Vindicación de los Derechos de la Mujer*. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, además de *Frankenstein* o *El moderno Prometeo* (1818), escribió entre otras novelas *El último hombre* (1826), *Lodore* (1835), *Falkner* (1837) y *Mathilda* (escrita entre 1819 y 1820 y publicada póstumamente en 1959).
