This is NOT an online meeting but an in-person meeting.
Reading the book is not required.

During the book discussion the leader of the discussion presents the most interesting parts of the book. The great emphasis is placed on discussion.

Book Description
In Map and Territory, Eliezer Yudkowsky explores a deceptively simple idea: the map is not the territory. Our beliefs, models, and explanations are not reality itself—they are imperfect representations of it. Yet people constantly confuse the two.
In this discussion, we’ll explore how humans construct mental models of the world, why those models fail, and how rational thinking can help us notice when we’re mistaking our stories for reality itself.

Discussion Topics

  • “The map is not the territory” — what does that actually mean?
  • Why humans confuse beliefs with reality
  • Evidence vs. explanation
  • Cognitive biases and distorted perception
  • How language shapes thinking
  • Scientific thinking vs. intuitive thinking
  • Can we ever see reality “objectively”?
  • What happens when entire societies share flawed maps?
